Orange essential oil is a favorite aromatherapy and essential oil choice. This oil is extracted from Citrus Sinensis and is called sweet orange oil. The sweet, citrusy aroma is an antidote for treating stress and drops of the oil can help treat a myriad of health conditions.
It is helpful to note that there are two types of orange essential oil – sweet and bitter. Sweet orange oil is different from essential oils obtained from bitter oranges. Bitter orange oil, such as the Bergamot essential orange oil, is produced from Citrus Bergamot.
Sweet orange oil, is referred to simply as orange essential oil. Orange essential oil benefits include clearer skin, better sleep, improved digestion and more. Here are 15 orange essential oil uses:
1. Treat and Control Acne
Orange essential oil has a grease-cutting effect that can reduce acne in individuals with oily skin.
Acne Mix:
- Two to three drops of orange oil
- One cup of water
Directions: use this orange oil acne mix to wash your face each evening before bed.
Deep Cleanser Mix or Make-up Remover:
- Three to four drops of orange oil
- One tablespoon of olive oil, sweet almond oil, or another light carrier oil
Directions: apply to the face with a cotton ball and allow the deep cleanser mix to remain on your skin for five minutes, and then wipe the cleansing mixer off.
When you apply and use this mix as a makeup remover, spread the mixer over your face and wipe it off with a warm cloth.
Acne Spot Treatment:
Dip a cotton swab into orange essential oil and lightly touch the acne. The Orange oil’s antiseptic effect can reduce the bacteria that cause acne.
2. Dental Hygiene
The aroma of orange oil is both refreshing and helpful. It can be used to combat bad breath and to treat gum infections and inflammatory dental concerns, including gingivitis and pyorrhea.
Orange oil will reduce the amount of bacterium in your mouth and reduce gum inflammation.
Gargling Mix:
- One cup of warm water
- Half of a teaspoon of salt
- Five drops of orange oil
Directions:
Mix the warm water, salt and drops of orange oil. Shake or stir vigorously. Gargle with the mixer daily to prevent and treat gum disease and to maintain oral health. Gargling with the orange oil mixer will also temporarily numb pain caused by mouth ulcers or inflammation.
3. Relieve Seasonal Allergy Symptoms
Seasonal allergy symptoms caused by respiratory allergens are treatable with orange essential oil. Inhaling tiny biological particles of pollen and mold cause the sinuses to become inflamed as the white blood cells recognize these particles as foreign bodies and release histamines.
Treat itchy and red eyes, sneezing and excessive mucous secretion with orange essential oil. Carry a small vial with you during allergy seasons.
Needed:
- Vial of orange essential oil and cotton swab
Directions:
When your nose begins to drip, you sneeze or sense tingling in your nose, simply sniff the orange oil. Inhaling the essential oil may relieve symptoms of nasal congestion and sinus headaches.
You can also carry a ball of cotton in a baggy with just a few drops of orange oil on it. Gently dab the cotton ball on your wrist or the palm of your hand.
4. Treating Anxiety and Improving mood
Orange essential oil has anti-depressant and anxiolytic properties and may be used to boost mood and reduce anxiety and depression.
Diffuse:
Five or six drops in a diffuser on low heat. The oil will bring a calm, worry-free atmosphere into the room.
Quick Results:
Two drops of orange essential oil on the palm of one hand or one wrist. Rub both together and raise them to your face to inhale the scent from the oil.
Citrus oils may cause phytotoxicity when exposed to direct sunlight, but the sweet orange essential oil is milder than other citrus based oils and can be used topically in minuscule amounts.

5. Relieve Fatigue
Physical and mental fatigue can be relieved with orange essential oil. Mix it with the essential oil of lavender.
Mix:
- Five drops each sweet orange oil
- Five drops of lavender oil
Diffuse:
Use a diffuser on low heat to disperse the oil into the room.
Quick Results:
Apply a drop of the orange essential oil and lavender oil mixture onto your pulse points.
Avoid using the orange oil drops in your bath water because of the risk of photo toxicity as mentioned earlier.
6. Arthritis Relief
Arthritic chronic inflammation, pain and swelling can be debilitating. The anti-inflammatory properties of the orange essential oil can provide relief.
Mix:
- Ten drops of orange oil
- One tablespoon of coconut oil melted over low heat
- Two or three drops of capsaicin oil
Directions:
Melt the coconut oil over low heat and add the drops of orange oil. Add the drops of capsaicin oil for pain, if needed. Apply to the joints or areas experience inflammation. Gently rub until it is completely absorbed.
7. Improved Digestion
The orange oil can improve digestion by reducing flatulence and other stomach problems that cause discomfort and poor digestion. Relieve constipation and gas and increase the secretion of enzymes needed for digestion with the use of orange oil.
Mix:
- Three or four drops of the orange oil
- One teaspoonful of olive oil
Directions:
- Mix the drops of orange and olive oil and apply to the on the abdominal area.
- One drop of the mixer can be dabbed on a tissue and placed near a colicky baby to bring relief.
Diffuse:
Five or six drops of sweet orange oil in the diffuser.
8. Reduce Water Retention
Water retention is often the cause of facial swelling, swollen feet, lethargy and exhaustion when walking short distances. Water retention hinders the body’s ability to circulate and expel the excess water.
Mix One:
- Three tablespoons sesame seed oil
- Ten drops orange oil
Directions One:
Warm the sesame seed oil and mix in the orange oil. Apply the mixture to the feet and massage.
Mix Two:
- Two tablespoons sea salt
- Ten to 15 drops of orange oil
Directions Two:
Add the sea salt and orange oil to warm water in your foot bath. Soak your feet in the foot bath for 20 to 30 minutes.
Mix Three:
- One teaspoon sea salt
- One cup warm water
- Five drops orange oil
Directions Three:
Combine the sea salt, warm water and drops of orange oil. To treat facial edema, dip cotton balls into the orange oil mixture and position under the eyes and on the cheeks.
9. Disinfect Home and Work Surfaces
Orange oil is a natural antiseptic that can be used to clean frequently used areas, including desks, counters, cabinets, door nobs, cutting boards and dining tables.
Mix:
- Ten drops orange oil
- One cup water
Directions:
Mix in a spritz bottle and spray surfaces and wipe with a sponge, or dip a sponge into the mixture and wipe the area clean. Let the surface air dry.
10. Natural Sleep Aid
Orange oil acts as a natural, mild sedative. This natural source can help to treat mental and physical fatigue, anger, pain and high emotions. The oil provides mild sedation that takes the edge away.
Diffuse:
Add three drops to the diffuser to help you relax at the end of a long day or after a very emotionally trying experience.
11. Anti-inflammatory
Inflammation is the body’s natural healing response, but uncontrolled, chronic inflammation creates swelling, pain and redness. Orange oil regulates the body’s inflammatory response to injury, infection and other irritants.

- Ten drops of orange oil
- One tablespoon of coconut oil melted over low heat
- Two or three drops of capsaicin oil

Directions:
When you have a runny nose or a cough, sniff the bottle of orange oil. Inhaling the essential oil will relieve nasal congestion and sinus drip that is causing the cough.
Place a few drops of the orange oil on a cotton swab and gently dab on your wrist or palm.
12. Antispasmodic Properties
Orange essential oil can be used to reduce involuntary muscle contractions or spasms, which can be debilitating. Spasms in the abdominal muscles can result in severe pain and diarrhea.

Mix:
- Ten drops of orange oil
- One tablespoon of coconut oil melted over low heat
